Strange creation of nature, in winter it is an island and in summer… peninsula! Prasonisi is a tiny island at the southwestern tip of Rhodes.
It is located 95 km south of the island’s capital and 12 km from the nearest village, Kattavia.
It is connected to the rest of the mainland by a narrow strip of sand,
which divides the Carpathian Sea in two. In winter, however, this strip disappears,
because it is covered by the waves.
However, whether an island or a peninsula, Prasonisi is the meeting point
of young people who love water sports, such as kitesurfing,
kiteboarding and especially windsurfing.
With the two bays formed on either side of the sand strip, the visitor is always
provided with a stormy sea and a peaceful one. He chooses and… gets!
on both sides of the strip that connects
Prasonisi with the rest of Rhodes, with a length of about 500 meters.
The special privilege that Prasonisi has is that when in the rest of the Aegean there
is relative apnea, here it blows a lot (around 4-5 Beaufort), while when
in the rest of the Aegean the stormy north winds of 9
and ten Beaufort rage here το half of Prasonisi is almost calm.
On the island there is a lighthouse built in 1890 by the French Society of Ottoman Lighthouses.
Access is relatively difficult (rugged dirt road that climbs two hills),
but the view of the Aegean from the lighthouse is fantastic. The cliffs next to the lighthouse are just breathtaking…
Go to the “island” depending on your mood and the sea, on foot or.
Swimming.
You can reach the edge of the sand strip from Kattavia by car and park in a vast natural parking lot.
Then you just forget about the car and the culture and want to stay in this exotic place for the rest of your life!
