So, near the village of Archangelos, another oasis of greenery inland is revealed under the foliage of the plane trees, where ducks and peacocks splash in the waters of the seven springs.

The castle in Monolithos was one of the 4 main castles of Rhodes during the time of the Knights. It is built on a hill of rocks that rises above a valley and dominates the whole area near the village of Monolithos in southwestern Rhodes.

The view from the castle in Monolithos is magnificent while the sunset is also wonderful. Apart from the external masonry inside the castle, some traces of buildings and tanks are preserved, while there is a well-preserved church dedicated to Agios Panteleimon.

The castle was an ancient frying pan and a Byzantine castle that had declined in the time of the Knights. The Grand Master D’Aubusson (1476 – 1503) who built castles all over Rhodes in order to strengthen the defense of the island and give strongholds that could be guarded by the inhabitants in the various raids and sieges, also built the castle of Monolithos 1476. The castle has its coat of arms at the entrance.

The castle in Monolithos, due to its extremely fortified location, was never occupied by enemies. The Knights of St. John were forced to abandon it during the great siege of 1522, in order to strengthen the defense of the city of Rhodes.
